Christoph Baaden

Film For Thought is helmed by Christoph Baaden. He began his directing film career in Berlin documenting the Rolling Stones on their 1998 Tour. Having caught the documentary bug he finished his triple major in American Studies, Politics and Media Studies in Germany before moving to the US to pursue his MFA in Film and TV Production, subsequently winning an Emmy for his Master Thesis.

Focusing on authentic content with cinematic style, he has directed and produced documentary films for broadcasters Sony, Universal, Discovery, and Warner. His first documentary feature, Hood To Coast premiered at SXSW in 2010 and was theatrically released in January of 2011. The film is set in the passionate world of amateur sports, celebrating the tenacity and spirit of the underdog, a theme that runs through many of his films. In addition to his feature work, he has created short films for national brands such as HP, Honda, Pandora, the University of California and many others, netting him a Clio win in 2016, an OMA award in 2015 and multiple Webby nominations. His latest feature MAGICIANS premiered at the prestigious Hot Docs Festival in April and will be released 11-15-2016 by Gravitas Ventures.

Our Philosophy

I have always been fascinated by everyday people in extraordinary circumstance. As a German transplant to the US, drawn by a curiosity to the unknown, there is no greater filmmaking adventure for me than diving into an unfamiliar world and experiencing it with my subjects. Showcasing the large and small triumphs that emerge in the context of unbounded determination makes a powerful platform.

I believe in the power of film to cut through preconceived notions and shake the audience’s view of how the world actually works. I live for that moment as a filmmaker, offering a glimpse at something unexpected and by doing so enriching our experience together.
